Anybody who watched TV last night would cry, where somebody brought his mother to play politics-Wike
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over remarks involving his late mother and the 2027 general election.
Wike made his position known on Saturday while speaking to members of the Uzugbani Ekpeye National Executive Council at Ekpeye House in Ahoada, Rivers State.
The FCT minister was responding to comments reportedly made by Amaechi concerning his late mother and the forthcoming election. Amaechi had reportedly stated that his mother would be happy if the African Democratic Congress emerged victorious in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike questioned the decision to bring a deceased family member into political discussions, arguing that Amaechi’s late mother should be allowed to rest without being associated with political campaigns or election outcomes.
“Anybody who watched television last night would cry, where somebody is bringing his own mother to play politics. Your mother that we thought should be resting peacefully,” Wike said.
He further argued that involving the deceased in political statements could create an awkward situation if the ADC eventually failed to win the election.
“It is unfortunate people can descend so low to use their mother to play politics,” he said.
Wike’s comments followed a recent interview Amaechi granted on Channels Television’s Politics Today, during which the former governor discussed national economic issues, government policies and the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death.
Amaechi’s mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, died in July 2026 and was laid to rest in September in Ubima, Rivers State. The burial attracted several prominent political figures.
The latest exchange adds another chapter to the long-running political rivalry between Wike and Amaechi, who both previously served as governors of Rivers State and have remained on opposing sides of the state’s political divide.
Their disagreement has continued to attract public attention as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.
Wike maintained that political disagreements should not involve deceased relatives, insisting that Amaechi should allow his late mother to rest rather than associate her with the outcome of an election.
