When Gen Otafiire drew a gun at Gen Muhoozi’s mother-in-law and resigned from Cabinet

The recent exchange of accusations and demands between Minister of Water and Environment Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire and Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has revived past incidents involving the two senior military figures.

Until Friday, Gen Kainerugaba had maintained that Gen Otafiire should apologise for comments he made about the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU). Gen Otafiire did not issue the apology. Gen Kainerugaba later withdrew the demand following an interaction with his uncle, Gen Salim Saleh.

Amid the dispute, details have resurfaced of an incident in which Gen Otafiire allegedly drew a pistol at Jennifer Kuteesa, the late mother-in-law of Gen Kainerugaba. Gen Kainerugaba is married to Charlotte Kuteesa, the daughter of former Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kuteesa. Sam Kuteesa was married to Jennifer, and Gen Kainerugaba and Charlotte married in 1999.

According to Fredrick Tumusiime, in a post titled “For the Gen-Zs”:

“In October 1988, #Otafiire was forced to resign from cabinet after drawing a pistol on a colleague’s wife during an argument.

“That lady was the late Jennifer Kutesa, mother to Charlotte and mother-in-law to MK.

“Ota returned to government. The beef is complex.”

The resurfacing of the account has added a historical dimension to the latest disagreement between Gen Otafiire and Gen Kainerugaba, although the circumstances surrounding the 1988 incident were not independently verified in the account. Gen Otafiire later returned to government, where he has held several senior positions.
