Law enforcement officials claimed that she repeatedly interfered with and struck an officer multiple times during the scuffle. However, her defense attorney argued that the responding officers unnecessarily escalated the situation. Body camera footage captured a police officer pushing Bonner to the ground and punching her face.

The physical encounter left the young college student with severe facial bruises for several days. Consequently, the shocking footage sparked widespread public outrage and intense concerns about the use of force online.

Fortunately for Eryn Bonner, county prosecutors ultimately declined to pursue felony charges. However, things changed this month.

Arizona State University senior Eryn Bonner has officially been criminally charged with two distinct misdemeanor offenses in Tempe City Court. The Tempe city prosecutors filed specific counts of disorderly conduct and hindering or interfering with police.

Initially, the high-profile Maricopa County Attorney’s Office thoroughly reviewed the evidence and completely declined to pursue felony charges. They found no reasonable likelihood of an eventual conviction based on the chaotic video footage. Consequently, the city chose to proceed independently with lower charges regarding her behavior on Mill Avenue.

Police documents allege that the 21-year-old stunt team member aggressively approached officers and repeatedly struck them.

“We are extremely disappointed by the City’s decision to move forward with criminal charges against Ms. Bonner,” Eryn Benjamin Taylor, Bonner’s attorney, said in a statement this week.

“The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office previously reviewed the evidence and declined to pursue felony charges, finding no reasonable likelihood of conviction. Now, more than two months later, the City of Tempe has chosen to revive this case against an Arizona State University stunt team member who suffered injuries and emotional trauma from this incident.

“Equally concerning is the fact that the Internal Affairs investigation remains under the direction of a sergeant who was previously suspended in a use-of-force case, despite repeated requests for an independent review. Ms. Bonner deserves fairness, transparency, and accountability, and we remain committed to fighting these charges and protecting her rights.”

Bonner has officially maintained her innocence by pleading not guilty to both of the outstanding misdemeanor counts.
