Neighbors Broke Down the Door to Save Her Life—Then the Police Lost Her Case Docket

Yamkela Sikhafungana was 26 and a mother living in Khayelitsha when she was allegedly subjected to a brutal assault by her boyfriend in July 2022.

According to accounts of the incident, Yamkela had gone out to visit a friend when her boyfriend allegedly became enraged.

She was reportedly locked inside their shack and severely assaulted.

The injuries she suffered were serious. She reportedly sustained fractures to her face and bones, while both of her eyes became so swollen that she could not see. She also suffered a broken nose, damaged blood vessels that required eye surgery and a deep wound to her head.

Yamkela spent more than a week in hospital recovering from her injuries.

Her ordeal allegedly continued beyond the physical assault.

Her boyfriend reportedly burned her clothes and personal belongings before pushing her outside while she was wearing only her underwear.

He then allegedly told her family that she was missing.

Her relatives became increasingly concerned after receiving information suggesting that Yamkela was still appearing online on WhatsApp. The family reportedly suspected that someone else was answering messages from her phone.

Yamkela’s cousin eventually went to the shack to look for her.

The boyfriend allegedly refused to open the door, prompting neighbours to help force entry.

Inside, they reportedly found Yamkela badly injured.

She was rescued and taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The matter was subsequently reported at Harare SAPS. Her boyfriend, later identified as Silulami Madikizela, was arrested and charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Madikizela was granted bail at the end of July 2022. One of the reported bail conditions required him to stay away from Yamkela and refrain from contacting her.

However, the family later alleged that he breached the condition by contacting Yamkela and remaining in the area.

The case subsequently encountered another serious problem when the police docket could reportedly not be located.

A magistrate later instructed the investigating officer to either find the missing docket or reconstruct the case.

The disappearance of the docket raised further concerns for Yamkela and her family, who had already endured the trauma of the alleged assault and the subsequent legal proceedings.

Yamkela’s experience highlights the importance of properly handling domestic-violence cases and ensuring that victims who report abuse receive appropriate protection and support.

The allegations against Madikizela remain matters for the legal process, and the accused is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.

For Yamkela and her family, however, the case remains a painful reminder of the devastating consequences domestic violence can have on victims and their loved ones.
