Today’s Headlines:Faces behind Tinubu Must Go campaign;Kano police warn Sanusi against horse riding
Tinubu Must Go, a slogan that began as scattered chants during Democracy Day protests in June 2026, has since crystallized into a coordinated movement.
On Tuesday, five men were arrested in Maiduguri, Borno State, on allegations that they were spotted wearing the T-Shirts of the movement but the police on Wednesday refuted the claim, saying they were arrested on suspicion of being in possession of drugs.
The Borno State Police Command explained that the arrest and prosecution of five youths were strictly due to alleged drug possession and public disturbance, refuting widespread social media reports that the men were targeted for wearing political T-shirts.
The clarification comes in the wake of backlash and condemnation from groups including Amnesty International and the Borno State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The Kano Police Command has issued a stern warning over horse riding by the two rival Emirs of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, saying anyone who violates the ban will be arrested.
The command said, “That any person, institution or organisation that deems it very pertinent to undertake any form of Durbar, and/or Horse/Animal-Riding activity in public place in the State is required to give at least 72 hours prior notice in writing to the Kano State Police Command through the Office of the State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori”.
Speaking to newsmen about a threat by the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, that “nobody will stop him from going on horse riding despite government banned”, the State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said anyone who violated the order would be arrested.
He said anyone who wanted to engage in horse riding should notify the police 72 hours in advance to enable the necessary security assessment and arrangements for public safety and order to be made.
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has hit back at politicians who criticised the President’s Independence Day speech, accusing them of ignoring his position on economic reforms.
In a post on Friday, Onanuga said some of the politicians had prepared their reactions before Tinubu delivered the October 1 address.
He said they ignored what he described as an “immutable truth” in the President’s speech.
Quoting Tinubu, Onanuga wrote, “Our reforms did not create the weaknesses in our economy. They confronted them.”
When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared in December 2025 that Nigeria would no longer run multiple budgets on the same revenue inflow, he appeared to be drawing a line under one of the country’s longest-running fiscal problems.
“We are terminating the habit of running three budgets in one inflow,” Tinubu said while presenting the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
By March 31, 2026, all capital liabilities from previous years will be fully funded and closed. From April, Nigeria will operate on a single budget backed by a single revenue cycle-no overlaps, no excuses, no rollovers.”
Nine months later, that timetable has been overtaken by events.
