EXPOSED: Why Tycoon Chivayo’s Bank Accounts Were Frozen by the Government Before His Death
Details have emerged on why Wicknell Chivayo’s accounts were frozen in South Africa, with his funds and other property restricted by the court as enquiries into his financial activities continued.
The action came as South African authorities examined financial transactions involving Chivayo and companies connected to him. The investigation included allegations of money laundering, claims that the businessman denied.
The matter drew attention after South Africa’s Financial Intelligence Centre reportedly tracked more than R800 million from Ren Form, a Johannesburg printing company that supplied election materials for Zimbabwe’s 2023 elections, to accounts associated with businesses linked to Chivayo.
The Financial Intelligence Centre reportedly flagged the transactions and passed its findings to South African law enforcement agencies, including the Hawks, for further investigation.
Chivayo’s assets were subsequently placed under restrictions while the legal proceedings continued. The order affected several bank accounts as well as other property, including his private jet.
The asset freeze did not mean Chivayo had been convicted of any offence.
Instead, the court restrictions were intended to stop the specified funds and property from being transferred, sold or moved while the investigation and court process were underway.
The case was tied to broader concerns surrounding Zimbabwe’s 2023 election materials contract.
Leaked recordings and financial documents had raised questions about the handling of money from the deal. Chivayo denied any wrongdoing and rejected the allegations.
Zimbabwe’s Anti-Corruption Commission later reported that it had not found evidence directly connecting Chivayo to fraud in the election materials contract.
Despite this, South African authorities continued to examine financial transactions associated with the matter.
The freezing of Chivayo’s accounts consequently became part of the wider legal and financial scrutiny surrounding his business activities in South Africa.
