Ghana’s New Cedi Notes: What the Bank of Ghana Has Confirmed Ahead of November Launch

The Bank of Ghana has provided further clarification on Ghana’s upcoming Heritage Series of banknotes, following public discussion and social media claims about the introduction of new cedi denominations.

The central bank has stressed that the Heritage Series is an upgrade of Ghana’s existing banknotes and should not be confused with a redenomination of the currency. The exercise covers the current GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200 denominations. No new denomination above GH¢200 is being introduced as part of the Heritage Series.

The upgraded notes are expected to feature stronger security measures, improved durability and redesigned elements reflecting Ghana’s history and national identity. The Bank of Ghana says the changes are intended to strengthen protection against counterfeiting while improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of currency management.

The central bank has also ruled out replacing the current cotton-based banknotes with polymer under the Heritage Series. Instead, the notes will continue to use a reinforced cotton substrate designed to improve durability.

Importantly, the introduction of the upgraded notes will not invalidate the banknotes currently in circulation. The existing notes will remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the Heritage Series, meaning members of the public will not need to rush to exchange their current cash.

The Heritage Series is scheduled to be officially launched on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra. The Bank of Ghana has urged the public to rely on official information as discussion continues over the changes.

The development has nevertheless generated public debate about the appearance, durability and historical figures that could feature on the redesigned currency, with social media users offering various suggestions.
