Ruto Again Breaks Silence With This Major Announcement to Mama Mbogas and Small-Scale Traders

President William Ruto has cautioned mama mbogas, small-scale traders and other business owners against falling victim to fraudsters who may use political campaigns as a way of soliciting money.

The warning comes as political activities gradually increase ahead of the 2027 General Election, creating an environment where individuals may attempt to take advantage of Kenyans through false promises and impersonation.

Ruto’s message is particularly important for small business owners who may be approached by people claiming to represent politicians, political parties or campaign teams. Such individuals could demand contributions while falsely presenting themselves as authorised representatives.

The President has previously called for firm action against people who finance or organise illegal activities linked to politics, urging security agencies to pursue not only those involved on the ground but also their organisers and financiers.

The warning also comes amid broader concerns about fraud targeting ordinary Kenyans. In July, Africa Check flagged fake social media posts falsely claiming that the government was distributing NYOTA funds and asking applicants to send money through M-Pesa.

With political conversations expected to intensify, business owners are being encouraged to verify requests for money before making any payments. Any person claiming to collect funds on behalf of a politician or campaign team should be properly identified and verified through official communication channels.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has also warned about the influence of illicit money in political campaigns, noting that questionable campaign financing can create pressure for corrupt deals after elections.

Ruto’s latest warning therefore puts the focus on protecting ordinary Kenyans from financial exploitation as the country moves closer to the 2027 polls.
