“The Kenyattas Are Richer Than Dangote” — Former Politician Wonders Where Uhuru’s Family Wealth Is

Former Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow has sparked debate online after claiming that the Kenyatta family is wealthier than Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote.

In a post shared on social media, Kerrow argued that despite the family’s reported wealth, it is difficult to identify major industrial investments owned by the Kenyattas in Kenya or elsewhere in Africa.

He referred readers to the Panama Papers while making his argument.

Kerrow’s remarks come as attention continues to focus on the business interests and wealth of the Kenyatta family.

Investigations based on the Pandora Papers linked members of the family to offshore companies and foundations in jurisdictions including Panama and the British Virgin Islands.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists reported that the family had offshore assets worth more than $30 million based on the leaked records.

The investigations also reported that several members of the family were connected to 11 offshore entities.

One investment portfolio linked to Muhoho Kenyatta was reported to have been worth about $31.6 million in 2016.

The records also showed links to property in the United Kingdom.

However, the existence of offshore structures does not by itself prove that the assets were obtained illegally, and the Kenyatta family did not respond to ICIJ’s requests for comment at the time.

Kerrow’s comparison with Dangote also raises questions about how wealth should be measured. Dangote’s business empire is highly visible through large industrial projects, including his massive refinery in Nigeria.

More recently, Dangote announced plans for Lamu refinery project in Kenya, highlighting the scale of his industrial investments.

The debate therefore goes beyond who is wealthier. It touches on the difference between private wealth, offshore assets and visible industrial investment.

Kerrow’s statement is a political and economic claim that has generated discussion online, while available investigations provide documented information about the Kenyatta family’s offshore holdings but do not establish that the family is richer than Dangote.
