Chad Lowe’s 13-year-old daughter died by suicide, the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner has concluded.
Emergency services responded to the family home at 12.10am on Tuesday and the teen was transported to an area hospital where the Medical Examiner said she was pronounced dead at 1.14am.
The autopsy report also reveals that her body may now be released to her parents.
The Lowes announced the news of Fiona’s death in a statement on Tuesday, describing their devastation at the loss of ‘a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance.’
‘She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents,’ the statement continued. ‘In fact, she was the light of our lives.’
The family also urged anyone struggling with mental health to reach out to the suicide prevention helpline.
Fiona was the middle child of Lowe and wife Kim Painter who married in 2010. They also share daughters Mabel, 17, and Nixie, ten.
Her grandfather Charles Lowe, the father of Chad and his older brother and fellow actor Rob, shared a touching tribute to her on Wednesday.
He posted a heartwarming photo of Fiona smiling at the camera as she swam in a pool, writing: ‘Rest in peace sweet Fiona.’
Parents at the teen’s school received an email from the principal on Tuesday, letting them know that a student had died, according to Page Six. The email did not specify who it was.
The message offered condolences to the student’s family and advised that ‘counselors are available to meet with students and staff who may need emotional support during this difficult time.’
Lowe’s Instagram account is full of heartwarming photos of his three daughters.
The doting dad paid tribute to Fiona last November on her birthday, sharing a photo of her beaming in cowboy boots.
‘Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!!’ the Emmy winner wrote. ‘Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!!’
The actor also shared a photo of all three of his daughters in February 2025, showing them visiting the ruins of their childhood home in Los Angeles, following the devastating Palisades wildfire.
The girls were seen with their arms around each other as they looked on at the ruins.
‘Almost a month after we evacuated our girls finally got to go back to see what’s left of their home,’ he wrote in the caption.
‘The way they’ve handled this whole devastating experience is nothing short of remarkable. I am in awe of their spirit and resilience. Helping them navigate these tough times is my sole purpose. Being their dad is my life’s greatest joy and privilege.’
‘However, this terrible experience has been a powerful reminder of this simple truth – we can’t always control what happens to us in this life but we can control how we respond. And I have been so incredibly proud of how my wife Kim and our daughters have strived to make the absolute best of this extraordinarily difficult circumstance. I am in awe of their resilience.’
Lowe, who has appeared on TV shows such as ER, 24, Melrose Place and Now And Again, reflected on being a ‘girl dad’ on the Still Here Hollywood podcast in August 2024.
‘Having daughters is such an incredible privilege,’ he shared.
‘It takes what I’ve known intellectually about women and all of equality and the glass ceiling that’s there, and how it’s a misogynistic world in a lot of ways… And it’s put it in my heart, because I have three daughters. And so I look at the world, really, from their perspective.’
The proud dad also raved about taking his three girls to Taylor Swift’s concert in 2023, sharing sweet snaps on Instagram and writing, ‘It’s official, I’m a certified Swiftie Dad! I totally get it now! What an awesome night!’
Lowe married Painter following the end of his first marriage to actress Hilary Swank, which lasted 10 years and ended in divorce in 2007.
He won an Emmy Award in 1993 for his supporting role on the comedy-drama series Life Goes On, where he starred as a man living with HIV.
