Kaizer Chiefs Legend Left Speechless by What Pirates Boy Mofokeng Did in Cairo
Relebohile Mofokeng produced an outstanding display as Bafana Bafana secured a convincing 5-0 victory over Eritrea in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group D encounter at Cairo’s Al Salam Stadium on Wednesday night.
The 21-year-old attacker scored twice during the opening half to register his first goals for the senior national team. His performance further highlighted his development and earned praise from former Bafana goalkeeper and Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune.
Speaking on SABC 2, Khune praised Mofokeng’s movement, first touch and composure in front of goal. He particularly admired the youngster’s opening goal, which came after Oswin Appollis supplied a precise pass into the penalty area.
“What a great run by Mofokeng. But what I like about it firstly is the first touch, the run, and the execution of the pass from Appollis. Then what a great finish by Rele,” Khune said.
Mofokeng had already shown his attacking threat before finding the breakthrough, hitting the post during the early stages of the match. He eventually opened the scoring in the 19th minute after Appollis located him inside the box, allowing the forward to calmly place his effort into the bottom corner.
The young attacker doubled the advantage shortly before half-time, giving South Africa a comfortable 2-0 lead at the interval. The two goals represented Mofokeng’s first strikes for the senior national team.
South Africa continued to control proceedings after the restart. Sphephelo Sithole added a third goal before Iqraam Rayners further increased the advantage. Substitute Luther Singh then completed the scoring during stoppage time to seal the emphatic victory.
The result means Bafana Bafana have collected six points from their opening two Group D fixtures. They previously defeated Guinea 2-1, giving the team a strong beginning to their qualification campaign under coach Pitso Mosimane.
For Mofokeng, the performance represents another significant milestone in his developing career. His progress at Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, combined with his breakthrough goals for Bafana, has increased attention on the young attacker.
His movement, technical ability and finishing were among the major highlights of South Africa’s impressive performance against Eritrea. Khune’s comments further underline the growing recognition surrounding Mofokeng as he continues to establish himself at international level.
