University of Ghana to make AI training compulsory for all students

The University of Ghana is set to make Artificial Intelligence (AI) training compulsory for all its students from the next academic year as part of efforts to prepare graduates for an increasingly technology-driven world.

Prof. Isaac Wiafe of the Interaction Labs at the University of Ghana’s Department of Information Technology disclosed this at the launch of the 2026 Achievers in Technology (AIT) Ghana Fellowship, held under the theme “Building Ghana’s Tech Workforce” on Friday, September 4.

He said the decision reflects the growing importance of AI and the need for universities to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to adapt to emerging technologies.

Prof. Wiafe, however, argued that universities should not be expected to train students specifically for individual companies, but rather provide them with strong foundational knowledge that enables them to adapt to different workplaces.

“The university gives you the fundamental knowledge that prepares you to be smart. And then when you join an organisation, you learn the skills… starting next academic year, every University of Ghana student is supposed to do AI as compulsory because we know that that is the future.”

He said the gap between university education and industry requirements must instead be addressed through programmes that provide graduates with practical, industry-specific skills after they acquire their academic foundations.

According to him, the emergence of AI should further push universities to rethink traditional teaching and assessment methods, rather than focusing solely on preventing students from using the technology.

“For those of us faculty and researchers, we should also change the way we are teaching. Change the way we are questioning students.”
