In a bid to promote Ghanaian food and foster togetherness among market women, the Eastern Regional Centre for National Culture (CNC) has organised a cooking competition for women at the Koforidua Central Market.

The competition, organised in partnership with Promasidor under the “Onga Maame Mukaase” initiative, was held on the theme “Enhancing Our Heritage through Ghanaian Traditional Cuisines.”

The event brought together market women who showcased their culinary skills by preparing a variety of traditional Ghanaian dishes, including Eto, Waakye, Akple and Fufu, among others.

The Eastern Regional Director of the Centre for National Culture, Dr. Dorcas Salamatu Alhassan, said the food Ghanaians eat and the way it is prepared form an important part of the country’s culture.

She explained that the Centre is committed to ensuring that Ghanaian culture is passed on from one generation to another, stressing that traditional methods of preparing local dishes must also be taught to the youth.

“We should teach our children how to eat our local food and teach them to speak our local dialect and also belong to each other,” she said.

Dr. Alhassan expressed concern that many people are developing health problems partly because of changes in their eating habits.

She therefore urged the youth to learn how to prepare and eat traditional Ghanaian meals.

She further noted that August has been designated as the Food and Drinks Month under the government’s Black Star Experience initiative, and called on Ghanaians to patronise local dishes and support efforts to promote Ghanaian food and culture.

The cooking competition provided an opportunity for the market women to celebrate Ghana’s rich culinary heritage while encouraging the preservation and promotion of traditional cuisine for future generations.
