Nyindam will stay as MP until 7 day mandatory stay of execution expires

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has described as ‘premature’ the claims and positions made by some members of the Majority Caucus seeking to prevent Matthew Nyindam, the Member of Parliament for Kpandai, from participating in parliamentary proceedings.

According to him, the Kpandai lawmaker, despite a court order annulling his parliamentary election and directing a rerun within 30 days, may still attend proceedings until the seven-day stay of execution of the High Court ruling expires.

Bagbin made this known while addressing the floor of Parliament on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

This means that Nyindam will continue to serve as an MP until December 1, 2025, when the stay of execution will expire.

“Honorable members, it is, therefore, premature to say that the Honorable Matthew Nyindam is disqualified from entering and participating in the proceedings of the House, because this period still falls within the seven days’ mandatory stay of execution of the order.

“Honorable members, this is not a declaratory order, it is an executive order that was delivered by the High Court, and so the Honorable Member is right to have been in the House yesterday and to have participated in the proceedings,” he said.

During proceedings on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Nyindam’s attempt to participate in debates was opposed by the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who argued that, in line with the court’s ruling and the law, Nyindam can no longer be recognised as a member of the House.

In a video shared by The 1957 News, he is heard saying, “Mr Speaker, yesterday, 24th of November, 2025, the High Court of Tamale ordered that the outcome of the 7th December 2024 election, which brought the Honorable Nyindam to this House as the Honorable Member for Kpandai, was floored, and therefore that election has been ordered to be rerun. Mr Speaker, ipso facto, the Honorable Nyindam is no longer a member of this House. He’s not. By operation of law, he’s no longer a member of this House with a voice.”
