The National Bureau of Statistics have released a staggering stat in the Nigeria’s headline inflation rate disclosing that it increased by 1.75 per cent in the month of May, marking the third consecutive monthly increase with persistent cost-of-living pressures despite a notable year-on-year improvement.

The NBS released its monthly evaluation releasing the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Inflation Report, showing the rate climbed from 15.69 percent recorded in April to 15.93, the pace of price increases moderated to 1.75 per cent in May, down from 2.13 percent in the previous month.

The CPI rose to 140.7 in May from 138.3 in April, reflecting a 2.4-point increase in the general price level.

While the latest figure represents a significant decline from the 26.06 per cent recorded in May 2025, the upward trend in recent months has raised concerns among households and policymakers.

The Guild reports that this latest data highlights the delicate balance in Nigeria’s disinflation journey, where annual gains coexist with short-term rebounds that affect everyday affordability for millions of citizens.
