President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his government’s commitment to upholding and protecting media freedom in Ghana.
He expressed concern about the growing decline of press freedom in recent years, warning that acts of intimidation, harassment, and interference against journalists will not be tolerated under his administration.
Speaking at the 2025 GJA/KGL National Awards held at the Manhyia Palace on Saturday, November 8, President Mahama announced plans to establish a forum between the security services and the media to promote mutual respect and prevent future incidents of abuse.
“Under my leadership, this government will neither sanction nor tolerate any form of intimidation, interference or attacks on journalists,” he assured.
He, however, urged journalists to balance freedom with responsibility, emphasising the need for accuracy and accountability in their work.
“My GJA colleagues, freedom must be balanced with responsibilities, too often the race to break the news first results in unverified publication and damage to reputation. We as journalists must also adopt pure accountability.”
The president’s remarks come amid growing calls for stronger protection of journalists and improved collaboration between the media and law enforcement agencies.
