AG reviewing Afenyo-Markin’s assault case docket

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai has confirmed that the docket on the case involving Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is currently before the Office of the Attorney General for prosecutorial review and decision.

“I can confirm that the docket on the case — The Republic v. Alexander Afenyo-Markin — is at the Office of the Attorney-General awaiting prosecutorial review and decision. The case involves a complaint of assault,” Srem Sai posted on his Facebook page on November 7.

The case stems from allegations that Mr. Afenyo-Markin assaulted a uniformed police officer at the entrance of Parliament House during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration held on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service, in a statement dated May 8, 2025, confirmed that the Minority Leader had presented himself to assist with investigations into the incident.

According to the Police, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) initiated the probe following a formal request to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, who directed the Effutu MP to cooperate with investigators.

In compliance with the directive, Mr. Afenyo-Markin reported to the Police on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, to assist with the ongoing inquiry.

The Attorney-General’s Office is expected to make a determination on whether to proceed with prosecution after completing its review of the docket.
