Dangote (Middle) emphasised that external financing will support the expansion project
Nigerian billionaire and industrial giant Aliko Dangote has announced an ambitious plan to more than double the capacity of his oil refinery, positioning the facility among the largest in the world.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos on Sunday October 26, 2025, Dangote revealed that the refinery’s output will be expanded to 1.4 million barrels per day, up from its current 650,000 barrels per day.
He described the move as both a strategic response to growing regional fuel demand and a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

“When it is completed, this will be the largest refinery ever built at a single site, surpassing India’s Jamnagar refinery,” he said while referencing the current global leader in refinery capacity.
Dangote emphasised that external financing will support the expansion project, enabling the privately managed refinery to better serve markets across Africa and beyond.
Although Nigeria remains one of the continent’s top crude oil producers, its reliance on imported petroleum products continues due to years of underperforming state-owned refineries hampered by chronic maintenance issues.
Since it began operations in January 2024, the Dangote refinery has been seen as a turning point for the sector which aims to ease pressure on both domestic consumption and export markets.
“We are officially announcing that we are expanding the Dangote Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, which will make it the largest refinery in the world ever. With this expansion, we will require over 65,000 workers.”
