Solomon Owusu is a leading member of the United Party
The United Party (UP+) has unequivocally stated that it will not comply with any court instruction to change its name.
The party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, asserted that the name is not the exclusive property of any single group, dismissing threats of legal action as mere “wishful thinking.”
Owusu was responding to recent remarks by Tia Kabiru, Member of Parliament for Walewale, who indicated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is considering legal measures to prevent Alan Kyerematen’s group from using the United Party name.
Kabiru had earlier argued that the choice of name is “problematic,” given the NPP’s historical political lineage to the original United Party (UP) tradition.
In a sharp rebuttal, Solomon Owusu described the Walewale MP’s comments as ill-informed and reflective of a lack of understanding of Ghanaian law — a deficiency he attributed to the MP being an economist rather than a lawyer.
Speaking in an interview on As It Is in Ghana on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM, Mr. Owusu affirmed that the rebranding of the Movement for Change to the United Party was deliberate and purposeful.
He highlighted the party’s core mission: to establish Ghana as the economic powerhouse of Africa by 2040.
According to him, UP+’s vision is anchored on a centrist position and a “UP mindset,” representing a new dawn aimed at ending political acrimony, offering a credible alternative, promoting women’s inclusion, and delivering economic transformation that will result in massive job creation all championed by the party’s leader, Alan Kyerematen.
Owusu noted that while the original United Party had a strained relationship with the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the current UP+ fosters positive relations with the CPP and other political entities.
He further alleged that the NPP has been “hijacked by Akufo-Addo,” transforming it into what he described as the “Nana People’s Party,” insisting that the NPP has lost touch with its founding roots.
On the matter of the name, Owusu was resolute, “No law court, no judge in Ghana can make us change our name.”
The United Party’s core values are centered on promoting integrity, enforcing law and order, encouraging meritocracy, and fostering patriotism.
UP+ also aims to restore discipline in public life and introduce respectful language into political discourse.
The party retains the monarch butterfly as its symbol, representing transformation, resilience, and endurance.
