Ghana’s Healthcare Financing in deep crisis – Adomako Kissi

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has expressed deep concern over Ghana’s weak healthcare financing system, describing it as far below global standards.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Dr. Adomako Kissi noted that while wealthy individuals, corporate bodies, and insurance institutions in other countries often contribute to the funding of healthcare delivery, the situation in Ghana — and across much of Africa — remains very different.

He lamented that it is rare to find people in Ghana or Africa donating substantial resources to support public healthcare.

“Let me put on record that our healthcare financing in this country is not at par with other places. In other jurisdictions, insurance companies supporting healthcare would also have many institutions providing support,” he said.

Dr. Adomako Kissi also appealed to Ghanaians, corporate institutions, and insurance firms to emulate global best practices by donating to improve healthcare funding in the country.

“In Ghana, Africa, our mentality is quite unfortunate, very different. We need to rethink, as ordinary Ghanaians, the need to not only pay for our own healthcare but also the health of the nation as a whole. So we are in a very deep pit in terms of healthcare financing in this country,” he appealed.

His comments follow Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh’s announcement that the Ministry of Health has obtained financial clearance for 17,909 nurses, midwives, and allied health interns who began national service in early 2024, along with an additional 13,500 nurses and midwives who have not received their salaries for the past ten months.
