Luckassen joins Black Stars camp as Djiku battles fitness issues ahead of World Cup

The Black Stars have received a timely defensive boost with Paris defender Derrick Luckassen arriving in camp as concerns grow over the fitness of key defender Alexander Djiku ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to SportyFM, the Dutch-born Ghanaian arrived at the team’s camp in Cardiff on Monday.

Luckassen’s arrival comes at a crucial moment, with Djiku reportedly battling an injury that could jeopardize his participation in Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

The experienced centre-back has been an important figure for the national team, making his fitness a major concern for head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical staff.

Should Djiku fail to make the final list set to be announced today, Monday, Luckassen could be handed an opportunity to stake his claim for a place in Ghana’s defensive setup on football’s biggest stage. However, Djiku’s condition will be closely monitored as the team awaits further updates on his recovery.

The Black Stars are set to face Wales in a final international friendly on June 2, 2026 before departing to the USA.

Ghana will face Panama, England and Croatia in Group C, with Queiroz hoping to have a fully fit squad available for the competition.
