Ghana’s Embassy in the United States is calling on citizens to strictly comply with US immigration laws and avoid overstaying their visas, cautioning that misuse of the recently restored visa privileges could harm the wider Ghanaian community.

Jane Gasu Aheto, Deputy Head of Mission, speaking on behalf of Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, Victor Emmanuel Smith, delivered the warning during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Ga Dangme Association in Washington DC.

She revealed that US visa restrictions for Ghanaians have been relaxed, with eligible applicants now able to obtain multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years—a significant change from the previous policy that limited most Ghanaian travelers to single-entry visas valid for only three months.

Aheto welcomed the policy shift but stressed the need for responsible use, urging Ghanaians to strictly adhere to visa terms.

Ghana US Embassy Overhaul: What it means for visa applicants

“After many deliberations, the restrictions on visas for Ghanaians have been lifted, and once again, Ghanaians are eligible for up to five-year multiple-entry visas.

“While this is very welcome news, it is imperative that we, as a people, do not abuse the privileges granted to us. We must ensure that we abide by the rules governing visas responsibly so that we do not suffer adverse consequences,” she said.

The Embassy reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Ghanaians in the US, emphasising that compliance with immigration laws is essential to maintaining these improved visa arrangements.

“The Embassy stands ready to offer support and assistance to our Ghanaian brothers and sisters who live and work here, in all their endeavors,” it stated.

The 40th anniversary event was attended by notable figures, including leaders from the Council of Ghanaian Associations (COGA), Ga Dangme Association executives, community elders, and guests from the Ghanaian diaspora across the US.
