John Dramani Mahama is the president of Ghana
President John Dramani Mahama has shared details of how some Mobile Money (MoMo) fraudsters operate in the country.
Speaking at the launch of this year’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, held on October 1, 2025, at Burma Camp in Accra, the president shared humorous incidents of how some fraudsters operate.
President Mahama, who was speaking under the theme “Building a Safe, Informed and Accountable Digital Space,” narrated an incident where an individual pretended to be a stammerer when a MoMo fraudster attempted to scam him.
“Sometimes you just entertain yourself when you hear from these people. A very cyber-aware person whom they tried to scam played along. And the conversation is normally very interesting… MTN will not call you in Twi. If they manage some good English, they will be like we are calling you from MTN. And your MoMo pin has been unblocked.

“Then they start leading you. And some of these, I respect those of our citizens. They say, Oh, is that so? He says, Yeah, I’m going to send you a code. When I send you a code, repeat it to me so that I can unblock your MoMo pin. The most interesting one is this guy who pretends to be a stammerer,” he said.
The president further advised Ghanaians, especially active Mobile Money (MoMo) users, to be cautious when they receive strange numbers from individuals who pretend to be workers of various telecommunication networks.
“I wish that all our citizens would be aware that your bank won’t call you, your telecom provider won’t call you, and ask for your personal details,” he added.
