The 2025 edition of the Absa Black Star Marathon is underway today, Saturday, July 26, at Accra’s Independence Square, with hundreds of participants hitting the streets as early as 6:00 a.m.
Organised in partnership with Absa Bank, the annual event aims to unite communities through sports while promoting health, fitness, and national pride. This year’s marathon has drawn attention not only for its competitive spirit but also for its strong social impact.
Speaking ahead of the event on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday July 25, Cyril Nai, a member of the Communications and Sponsorship team at Absa Bank, emphasised the marathon’s broader purpose.
“The race helps raise awareness around chronic health conditions such as kidney disease and promotes healthy living,” he said.
A notable highlight of the 2025 edition is the inclusion of a wheelchair race, marking a major step forward in diversity and inclusion. “Inclusion is part of our values. We view diversity as a strength,” Mr. Nai added. “Bringing different people from all walks of life in championing a cause is very important.”
The event also seeks to position Ghana as a global destination for elite road races and to help nurture local athletic talent for international platforms.
The entire marathon is being broadcast live on Channel One TV, offering viewers exciting scenes from one of Ghana’s premier sporting events.
