Inspector General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has revealed a personal brush with mobile money fraud, exposing a scheme operated by inmates at Nsawam Prison as reported by Ghana Web.
According to the IGP, he was recently contacted by a scammer who attempted to deceive him into dialing a suspicious code, a move that could have compromised his mobile money account.
Sensing the trick, he probed the caller’s identity. “I asked him, my brother, where are you? What work do you do? Are you sure you are genuine? I know where you are,” Yohuno recounted.
The fraudster, realizing he was exposed, abruptly ended the call.
Further investigation by the police traced the origin of the call to Nsawam Prison, where inmates are believed to be operating sophisticated fraud rings.
These scams often involve background sound effects, including police sirens, to coerce victims into transferring money under false pretenses.
The IGP also recounted another case involving a prominent Ghanaian man who was threatened with death unless he paid GH₵100,000.
The man, in a state of panic, approached the IGP for help.
When the police traced the number used, it too was linked to Nsawam Prison.
Yohuno stated that despite serving lengthy sentences, some inmates continue to defraud the public using mobile phones.
“You can imagine somebody who is in prison and is being re-arrested. What punishment, again, can you give them?” he questioned.
He urged the public to remain alert and to involve the police immediately when confronted with suspicious calls, stressing the importance of verifying a caller’s identity before taking any action.
