Minister in charge of Government Communication, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has instructed a taskforce to deal with individuals involved in illegal mining, also known as galamsey, regardless of their status.

He revealed that the President urged the taskforce being deployed to tackle the menace to take decisive action and leave no stone unturned, regardless of who is involved.

The minister stressed that the government is fully committed to combating galamsey and has introduced stringent measures, including the formation of a taskforce to tackle the issue.

“President Mahama says even if his brother is involved in galamsey, they should go after him. Fighting galamsey requires political will, and President Mahama has that will,” Ofosu Kwakye stated on TV3’s KeyPoints, aired on July 19, 2025.

The Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese MP noted that 518 persons have been arrested for their involvement in illegal mining and that the operation will continue.

“President Mahama believes that fighting galamsey will rather enhance the fortunes of the party. 518 persons have been arrested for galamsey,” he added.

The galamsey menace has been one of the most discussed issues in the country, with civil society groups and other prominent personalities calling on the government to take action.

The destruction of water bodies and forests, which threatens the environment, has been cited as a key concern that could have severe consequences in the future.
