The University of Ghana has reported 141 active COVID-19 cases amid a localized outbreak, prompting heightened health protocols across its campuses.
Ghana Health Service (GHS) Director of Public Health Dr. Franklyn Asiedu Bekoe confirmed all cases are mild but urged sustained vigilance, declaring the virus “endemic” in Ghana.
According to Dr. Asiedu Bekoe, the surge requires containment through early symptom reporting and adherence to preventive measures. “COVID has come to stay; we must learn to live with it,” he stated during a media briefing, noting he personally maintains handwashing and masking protocols. The university’s Health Services Directorate reactivated COVID-19 response systems on June 23, implementing facility screenings and renewed masking mandates in enclosed spaces.
University authorities have issued specific advisories: mandatory face masks in crowded areas, frequent hand sanitization, physical distancing, and avoiding non-essential gatherings. Staff and students experiencing flu-like symptoms must isolate and seek immediate medical care. The outbreak remains concentrated within the university community, contrasting with sporadic cases elsewhere in Ghana.
Health officials emphasize this resurgence underscores the need for sustained public health measures under President Mahama’s administration, even as Ghana transitions to long-term endemic management.
