Fulfill promise on anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has submitted a formal petition to President John Dramani Mahama, strongly condemning what he describes as the “desecration” of two of Ghana’s most sacred national monuments by individuals promoting LGBTQ+ causes.

The petition, dated Thursday, June 26, follows the circulation of social media photos showing two individuals—believed to be members of the LGBTQ+ community—posing for pictures at Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

According to the MP, the images have sparked widespread outrage among Ghanaians who regard these monuments as powerful symbols of the nation’s freedom, pride, and spiritual identity.

“These spaces are sacred. They are not to be turned into platforms for promoting acts that are fundamentally alien to our cultural, moral, and religious values,” Assafuah wrote.

Describing the images as more than a mere social statement, the MP characterised the act as a “moral affront” and a “spiritual insult” to the conscience of the nation.

He argued that the actions reflect a broader attempt to normalise what he referred to as “immoral” behaviour that the majority of Ghanaians reject.

In his petition, Assafuah reminded President Mahama of his 2024 campaign promise to sign the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill into law if elected.

He urged the President to uphold that commitment and take urgent legislative action to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

“The moral defence of this country deserves the same urgency, if not more, than past policies passed under a certificate of urgency—such as the Dumsor Levy,” he stated.

The MP stressed that the issue goes beyond partisan politics, calling it “a spiritual issue” concerning “the soul of Ghana.” He called on President Mahama to publicly condemn the incident and reaffirm his government’s commitment to Ghana’s traditional values.
