Tsatsu Tsikata Secures Major Victory for NDC as High Court Removes NPP MP from Parliamentary List

Veteran lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata has scored a major legal victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following a High Court ruling that has removed a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament from the official parliamentary list.

The case, which began in 2020 through a legal challenge filed by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, questioned the legitimacy of certain MPs’ positions in the House. Though the Supreme Court had temporarily halted the enforcement of Bagbin’s decision in October 2024, Tsikata successfully argued that the stay of execution had no legal basis.

The High Court has now upheld the Speaker’s original stance, ordering that the affected NPP MP’s name be struck from the parliamentary records. This decision affirms both Bagbin’s authority and the NDC’s legal strategy, and it is being widely celebrated by the party and its supporters.

This development adds to Tsikata’s growing list of high-profile legal engagements, including his current involvement in the Article 146 petition seeking the removal of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo over alleged financial misconduct.

The ruling has stirred political debate, with some NPP loyalists alleging judicial bias. However, the NDC maintains the outcome reflects a commitment to justice. G. Quason, an NDC figure, praised the verdict, emphasizing that “crime has no expiry date.”

Meanwhile, political tensions continue to rise, as protest actions are planned across Accra. Demonstrators, led by Quason and others, have vowed sustained street action to demand transparency and accountability.

Although this ruling does not directly relate to issues such as national health policy or trade, it reflects the broader power struggles and legal confrontations shaping the dynamics of Ghana’s Ninth Parliament.
