Thousands attend burial rites for late Asante Mamponghene

Burial rites for the late Asante Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, have commenced in Mampong, Ashanti Region, drawing thousands of mourners from across the country.

The traditional funeral, known in Akan as Doteyie, began on Thursday, June 6, and will conclude on Monday, June 9, with the final rites to be performed by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The mourning period is marked by drumming, dancing, and sacred traditional rituals led by spiritual leaders in customary regalia, as the people pay their last respects to the late chief.

Mourners, on Saturday, June 7, were clad in black and red, symbolising grief and reverence.

Born Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II ascended the Asante Mampong throne on August 25, 1996, becoming the 28th occupant of the Silver Stool and the Krontihene of Asanteman. He passed away in April 2025 at the age of 85.

During his reign, he was credited with resolving chieftaincy disputes in Mampong, maintaining peace, and promoting development.

He was also a vocal opponent of illegal mining and played a key role in preventing galamsey operations in his jurisdiction.

A respected academic and administrator, Daasebre served as Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) from 1991 until his retirement in 2000, capping a 28-year career in public service.
