Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has criticised the government over the passage of the controversial GH₵1 Energy Sector Levy, without proper stakeholder consultation.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, June 7, the MP who doubles as the Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee of Parliament noted that key stakeholders, including transport unions, were left out of the process.
According to him, the amendment to the levy was rushed through Parliament without prior notice or engagement.
Citing the absence of the bill on the Order Paper on the day it was passed, he slammed the government for employing questionable parliamentary procedures to push the bill into passing.
“There was no stakeholder engagement. I am a Member of Parliament. I am a Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee. I only saw the Memorandum to the amendment when we were asked to join the Finance Committee for an emergency meeting.
“Nobody engaged anybody. GPRTU, which is the mother body that controls all drivers, was not aware. What kind of engagement are you talking about? Indeed, on the day of this bill, the initial order paper did not have this particular item on it. It was later that they brought an order paper addendum that was sneaked in even in parliament,” he said.
