Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka was caught on camera demanding back his money from assembly members
Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, the nominee of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the position of Juaben Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who was captured in a viral video demanding the return of monies allegedly paid to assembly members after his rejection, has been acquitted and discharged by the Kumasi High Court.
Providing an update on the trial, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), in a Facebook post on Monday, May 26, 2025, indicated that the acquittal followed the ruling of the presiding judge, Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori.
According to the verdict, the video submitted as key evidence showing the accused angrily demanding the return of his money did not conclusively prove that the funds were intended to induce or influence the voting decisions of the assembly members.
“The High Court in Kumasi has acquitted and discharged Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for Juaben Municipal Chief Executive in the Ashanti Region. He had been facing 26 counts of corruption in relation to a public election since May 2022.
“Mr Sarfo-Kantanka appeared in a viral video allegedly demanding the return of monies he reportedly paid to assembly members to secure confirmation of his nomination. However, in her judgement, Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori held that the video did not establish that the monies were intended to influence the votes of the assembly members,” the OSP shared.
Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka had been standing trial since May 2022, facing 26 counts of corruption following the emergence of the viral video, after the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) filed criminal charges against him.
According to the OSP, the charges were in respect of corruption arising out of two public elections conducted in September and November 2021 for the confirmation or otherwise of his nomination by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the position of Municipal Chief Executive for Juaben in the Ashanti Region.
