Dissolve committee probing petitions asking for Chief Justice Torkornoo’s removal

A former parliamentary aspirant for the Adenta constituency in Accra and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee probing the petitions, asking that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo should be removed from office.

His reason is that, last week, two members of the committee, together with counsel for one of the petitioners, were seen having dinner at a restaurant in Accra where they were overheard discussing matters in the petition over dinner.

His argument is that, it will be good for the committee to be dissolved so that the process does not become a “sham” especially when he claims counsel for one of the petitioners, was overheard discussing the matter with two members of the committee at the restaurant.

For this reason, Ababio Kumi wants President Mahama to dissolve the committee.

“If we have matters of the removal of a Chief Justice, which is a constitutional matter, some of these things must be clearly looked at in order that the process does not become a “sham,” he claimed.

He claimed to have submitted his petition to the presidency on Monday around 4pm [May 19] and indicated that the two members of the five-member committee, which is chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang were seen at the restaurant between 7:30pm and 8:30pm on May 15, 2025.

The petitioner claims that the meeting of the members on the committee and the counsel for one of the petitioners attracted the attention of some other people who were at the restaurant and it excited their curiosity.

He said all the four persons seen at the meeting had critical roles to play in the petitions under consideration asking that the Chief Justice should be removed from office

The committee started its work last week.

 Who is the petitioner?

Alfred Ababio Kumi was an NPP parliamentary aspirant in 2020 and 2024.

What is he asking for?

He claims that he wants to notify President Mahama of some actions of some of the members on the committee investigating the Chief Justice and the lawyer for one of the petitioners.

It is his case that the actions of the members are not good for the proceedings of the committee and that in his view their actions raise concerns about “unfairness” and possible bias.

He claims that in the evening of May 15, 2025, between the hours of 7:30pm and 8:30pm, they were were seen having dinner with counsel for one of the petitioners before the committee at the restaurant at the Airport Residential area.

He gave the status and interests of all the four persons and claimed that the fact that they were overheard discussing matters in relation to the petitions asking for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was not good for the overall process.
