‘Our democracy is under siege’

The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has strongly criticised President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, labeling the move as a serious threat to Ghana’s democratic foundations.

In a post on his X page on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Ahiagbah wrote, “Finding faults where none exist. Next up is the Electoral Commission. Our democracy is under siege.”

His remarks come in response to an official announcement from the Presidency, which followed the establishment of a prima facie case in three separate petitions seeking the Chief Justice’s removal from office.

According to a press statement issued by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the suspension was executed in strict adherence to constitutional procedures.

A committee has since been formed to probe the allegations against Justice Torkornoo.
