The Private Universities Students’ Association of Ghana (PUSAG) has urgently appealed to the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) for immediate action to prevent a potential crisis among its members.

PUSAG President, Ibrahim Issah, made the appeal during a recent meeting with the Acting CEO of the SLTF, Dr Saajida Shiraz.

He used the opportunity to advocate for the prompt disbursement of student loans and the implementation of long-term solutions tailored to the unique needs of private university students.

The meeting followed growing concerns that delays in loan disbursements could lead to exam deferments and disqualifications for students struggling to pay their fees.

During the discussion at the SLTF Head Office in Accra, President Issah emphasised the urgent need for financial assistance as students prepare for their end-of-semester examinations.

He urged the SLTF to expedite the release of funds to ensure that no student is barred from sitting exams due to outstanding fees.

Beyond the immediate disbursement issue, PUSAG presented a comprehensive set of proposals to address the systemic challenges faced by students attending private universities. These included a restructuring of the SLTF portal’s opening and disbursement calendar to align with the diverse academic schedules of private institutions.

PUSAG also called for a review of the current loan ceiling of GH¢2,550 per academic year, arguing that it is insufficient to cover the often higher tuition fees charged by private universities.

In response, PUSAG proposed the introduction of a “Students Loan Plus” initiative, specifically designed for students in fee-paying institutions and high-cost programs.

Further proposals included a joint PUSAG-SLTF national awareness campaign aimed at educating students on responsible loan usage, credit management, and repayment options. PUSAG also suggested linking SLTF beneficiaries to internship and employment opportunities to facilitate sustainable loan repayment after graduation.

To incentivize service in underserved areas, the association proposed loan forgiveness or incentive programs for graduates who accept postings to rural communities.

Finally, PUSAG requested the establishment of a dedicated PUSAG Desk at the SLTF Secretariat and the provision of internship opportunities for private university students.

In response to PUSAG’s concerns and proposals, Dr. Saajida Shiraz, Acting CEO of the SLTF, expressed her support and assured President Issah that the issues raised would be escalated to the government and relevant stakeholders for consideration and action.
