Ghanaians had such big expectations—Vickie Bright slams Akufo-Addo’s government

According to reports from GhanaWeb, Vickie Bright, a former legal advisor to John Agyekum Kufuor, has voiced her dissatisfaction with how the country was managed under the previous administration led by Akufo-Addo.

During an interview on JoyNews, she was asked to assess the former government, and she did not hold back in expressing her frustration.

In her view, numerous challenges plagued the administration, leading to disappointment among the people.

She noted that the government initially had strong public support but failed to meet the expectations of Ghanaians with several of its decisions.

“What I’ll say, though, is that it all started with such hope. Ghanaians had such big expectations; there was such goodwill following the former president,” she stated.

According to Bright, Ghana, as a relatively small nation, did not require such a large number of ministers in leadership positions.

Reflecting on the initial optimism surrounding the government, she recalled how hopeful Ghanaians were when the former president was elected.

She mentioned that traders at Makola Market even reduced their prices in anticipation of better economic conditions. However, she lamented that, in the end, expectations were not met.

She criticized what she described as an overly large government, emphasizing that a country with a population of 32 million had no justification for appointing over 100 ministers.

Bright also expressed her dismay at the extravagant spending habits of many African leaders, especially when seeking financial assistance from Western nations.

She found it baffling that significant sums of money were spent on private jet travel to request aid from countries where leaders use public transportation.

She also questioned the continuous purchase of expensive vehicles, arguing that they were unnecessary and unaffordable for a country facing economic challenges.

In her view, the financial difficulties faced by citizens played a major role in the ruling party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

She pointed to the impact of pension investment losses, which led to protests and further dissatisfaction with the government.

She believed that resources could have been allocated more effectively and expressed regret over how events unfolded under the previous leadership.

Bright highlighted the scale of public discontent, pointing to the election results as evidence that many citizens were deeply frustrated.

She referenced the struggles of pensioners who protested under difficult conditions, stressing that the level of hardship was undeniable.
