Our MPs cannot speak in the Parliament because they cannot speak English, it is unfortunate-Lardy

In a recent report on GHOne TV, former Information Minister Theresa Lardy sparked controversy with her comments regarding the language barrier in Ghana’s Parliament. Lardy was quoted saying, “MPs on this side cannot speak in Parliament because they cannot express themselves in the English language.”
Addressing the issue, Lardy, who described the former Information Minister as a “very good friend,” expressed regret over the remarks, calling them “unfortunate.” She emphasized the need for leaders in Ghana to set a positive example and be role models in paving the way forward. “We should be the ones out there to chart the path for everybody to follow,” she added.
Lardy further drew comparisons to countries like Germany, where even though English is widely spoken, individuals are still expected to learn the local language before being allowed to work or integrate into society.
She explained, “When you go to places like Germany, even if they speak English, they’ll force you to learn their language first. You cannot work with them unless you learn their language.”
Referring to the language policies in Ghana, Lardy suggested that the issue might be compounded by the challenges faced by students in the Greater Accra region. “Students in Greater Accra are being forced to learn Twi instead of the Ga language. I think it’s something we should all plead to our Education Minister to look at for us.”
