Political commentator Professor Enoch Opoku Antwi has described Ghana’s Appointment Committee as a platform for making irrelevant questions rather than assessing the competence of nominees.
Speaking in an interview with Afia Pokua Vim Lady, the governance expert criticised the committee for focusing on personal matters such as age, tribe, number of children and wives, and religious beliefs as a benchmark for qualification, instead of scrutinizing nominees based on their suitability for the roles they have been nominated for.
If you are given the opportunity to ask questions, you should not be asking about dancing, among others,” he said. According to him, the vetting process should not be reduced to a platform for political point-scoring but rather serve as an avenue for educating and informing the public about the competence of the nominees.
He expressed concerns that from the nature of questions asked, Ghanaians have not gained any significant value from the vetting process. As a solution, he recommended human resource training for some members of the committee to enhance their ability to conduct meaningful and professional vetting.
“Vetting should not be used as a platform to score political points. It should be an avenue to learn and teach viewers. Questions should be related to the positions they’ve been nominated for. From the kind of questions being asked, Ghanaians have not gotten any value from the questioning. I suggest they give human resource training to some of the vetting committee.” He said.
His comments add to the growing criticism of the Appointments Committee’s approach, with many Ghanaians questioning whether the vetting process truly serves its intended purpose of ensuring competent leadership in public office.
The vetting process has often been a subject of controversy, with some arguing that it is used as a political tool rather than a professional evaluation mechanism. Prof. Opoku Antwi’s remarks highlight the need for reforms to ensure more productive and insightful assessments of nominees
