According to reports from Citi News, Dr. Clement Apaak, recently appointed as Deputy Minister for Education, has recognized that his previous comments critiquing the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration’s approach to illegal mining, or galamsey, were overly severe.
During his vetting session with Parliament’s Appointments Committee on February 25, 2025, Dr. Apaak reflected on his earlier statements and acknowledged that they were excessive.
His initial criticisms, voiced on social media prior to the 2024 general elections, accused the government of facilitating illegal mining and profiting from it.
During the vetting, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin highlighted these remarks and requested clarification from Dr. Apaak.
In his response, Dr. Apaak conceded that his criticisms may have been too sweeping.
“Given the context provided, it is only fair and appropriate that I concede that I was rather too excessive in blaming an entire government for the infractions of a few,” he stated.
He remarked on the importance of fairness and admitted that he had been too harsh in attributing the actions of a few to the entire government.
He expressed his willingness to own up to his statements, further affirming his accountability.
