Another Banger Loading as George Ruto’s 98 Sacco Prepares to Introduce New Matatu
George Ruto’s growing investment in Nairobi’s public transport sector has attracted fresh attention after images emerged showing a new matatu being assembled at a workshop, bearing the branding of his 98 Sacco.
The unfinished vehicle features a red exterior, a prominent number 98 logo and the Ninety Eight Logistics emblem. It also carries the inscription ESTD 2026, reflecting the year George officially launched the transport business.
Although the matatu is yet to be completed and officially introduced to the public, its appearance has already generated excitement among matatu enthusiasts, with some describing it as another potential addition to Nairobi’s celebrated nganya culture.
The latest development comes as George continues to increase the number of vehicles operating under the 98 brand. In September 2026, he unveiled six additional matatus designed to serve the Embakasi and Rongai routes, bringing the reported number of vehicles launched under the Sacco to 17.
The six vehicles attracted attention because of their customised appearance, featuring graffiti artwork, bucket seats, specialised rims, colourful LED lighting and powerful entertainment systems.
Reports indicated that the cost of customising each vehicle pushed its estimated value beyond KSh 7 million.
Some of the recognisable vehicles associated with the fleet include Raptor, Money Fest, Matrix, Mood, Baba Yaga, Manifest and Ambush.
One of the standout additions has been Mood, which George unveiled in July 2025. The vehicle reportedly attracted an estimated value of KSh 14 million, partly because of its elaborate entertainment setup, including a DJ section.
Beyond the flashy designs, George has previously explained that his decision to venture into the matatu business was influenced by his interest in the industry, which dates back to his high school years.
He has also identified employment creation for young people as one of his major motivations for investing in the transport sector.
The business has provided opportunities for workers, including drivers, conductors and other people involved in daily matatu operations. Stage marshal George Sagini has also encouraged jobseekers interested in working with the Sacco to apply.
However, the fleet has previously faced criticism following complaints about road behaviour. The National Transport and Safety Authority impounded two vehicles reportedly associated with the brand after concerns were raised about reckless driving.
Despite the challenges, the appearance of another vehicle in the workshop suggests that George’s transport investment is continuing to grow, with matatu enthusiasts now waiting to see its completed design and official unveiling.
