Bank Of Ghana Set To Introduce New Heritage Series Banknotes

Ghana is preparing for a fresh chapter in the history of its national currency as the Bank of Ghana gets ready to introduce redesigned cedi banknotes under a new initiative known as the Heritage Series.

The upgraded notes are expected to combine modern currency technology with designs that celebrate the country’s history, culture and national identity. The initiative will also provide an opportunity to honour Ghanaian heroes through the images and symbols featured on the banknotes.

The Bank of Ghana says the new series will come with enhanced security features designed to strengthen protection against counterfeiting. The notes are also expected to have improved durability, allowing them to withstand the demands of prolonged use and potentially reduce the frequency and cost of replacing damaged currency.

The Heritage Series will retain the existing denominations, covering GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200. The GH¢2 denomination is also expected to return as part of the upgraded series.

The introduction of the new banknotes is not intended to make the current cedi notes invalid. According to the central bank, both the existing and upgraded notes will circulate together, meaning Ghanaians will still be able to use their current banknotes for everyday transactions.

The Bank of Ghana has therefore advised the public against rushing to exchange or withdraw existing notes simply because the Heritage Series is being introduced.

The banknote upgrade comes as the central bank seeks to respond to developments in currency technology and changing security standards. The designs currently in circulation have been used for more than two decades, making modernisation an important part of efforts to maintain the security and reliability of the cedi.

The launch, initially scheduled for November 3, has been postponed to November 12, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.

Beyond the technical improvements, the Heritage Series is expected to give the cedi a stronger cultural identity by bringing elements of Ghana’s past and aspirations into the design of its currency.

The central bank has also encouraged Ghanaians to handle banknotes carefully, warning against practices such as writing on, stapling, crumpling or using money for decorative displays. It says proper handling will help preserve the quality of the notes and reduce replacement costs.
