Commuters on the Accra–Madina stretch are being advised to brace for significant disruptions as the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) implements new traffic management measures to facilitate the expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge.
The Ministry of Roads and Highways initially launched a full diversion on March 9, which led to massive gridlock and widespread commuter frustration. In response to the backlash, authorities have revised the plan to focus primarily on weekends and public holidays for the next four months.
Key Traffic Adjustments
Starting Saturday, March 14, 2026, the following arrangements will be in place:
Northbound Lane Closures: The N4 Northbound carriageway (Accra toward Madina) will be temporarily closed during T-beam launching operations.
Short-Term Operations: Each specific closure for bridge work is expected to last between two to four hours.
Carriageway Reconfiguration: The Southbound carriageway (Madina toward Accra), which normally has four lanes, will be reconfigured to allow two lanes of traffic in each direction.
Suggested Alternate Routes from the Authority
To avoid the anticipated congestion at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, the GHA and local traffic updates suggest the following alternatives:
From Lapaz to Shiashie/Oponglo: Motorists can use the GIMPA to University Road through the Legon Hospital area to exit at the Oponglo traffic light.
East Legon Bypass: Drivers from Tema heading toward East Legon or Madina are encouraged to use the nearly completed bypass at the East Legon underpass, which links directly to the East Legon Police Station area.
Spintex Road: The recently integrated Flower Pot Interchange and widened Spintex Roadsections can serve as alternate links for those traveling between the Motorway and surrounding residential hubs.
The authority has emphasized that these measures are essential for the safety of both construction workers and road users therefore motorists are urged to, plan journeys in advance to account for potential delays. Commuters are also advised to follow all temporary road signs and directions from traffic officials, while exercising extreme caution when approaching the construction zones.
