The greens of Benoni Bowling Club (BBC), Lake Club Benoni and Northmead Bowling Club were a hive of activity as bowlers from across the country converged for the Perfect Delivery Bowls SA Open ‘B’ Inter-District Championships from March 9 to 12.

While Edenvale Bowling Club served as the main host venue, the Benoni clubs played an important supporting role by staging several fixtures.

The dedication of greenkeepers and club members was evident throughout the tournament, with the playing surfaces presented in immaculate condition and participants warmly welcomed, ensuring the national showpiece was enjoyed both on and off the greens.

“We are trying to get the standard of the greens to a level where people can truly enjoy the sport, and I think we managed to get them up to standard.

“Everybody seems to be enjoying it, so for now, I think everyone is happy. It’s very important for us to host big competitions like this,” said BBC greenkeeper Willem Viljoen.

Almost two years after BBC co-hosted the International Bowls for the Disabled Championships, Viljoen said it was a proud moment for the club to once again be selected as one of the venues for a major tournament.

“It makes us proud, especially when the greens are up to standard, the facilities are good, and everyone can come and enjoy the event,” he said.

Sandra Mackay, chairperson of Lake Club Benoni bowls section, said the club was honoured to co-host the prestigious tournament.

Bowlers from Northern Free State and Eastern Province.

“It’s a prestigious competition in itself. We’ve had tremendous support from our members, who have been working every day from 06:00 until around 19:00. Hosting this event is not only an honour and a privilege, but it also allows us to watch spectacular bowls every day,” she said.

Mackay also praised greenkeeper John Molupi for the pride he takes in preparing the playing surface.

“John is a top-tier bowler and he sees the green as his own colour palette. It’s his green, so he always makes sure it is in perfect competition condition,” she said.

Herman Kleynhans, Dylan Mitchell, Gerrit van Niekerk and Trevor Geel.

She also expressed gratitude to vice-chairperson Dipak Bhika for his tireless efforts behind the scenes.

“He has been the hardest working person we’ve had over the past three weeks,” she added.

At Northmead Bowling Club, Herman Webber thanked members for their dedication and support in delivering a successful tournament.

“A lot of work has been put in by the members and a lot of money has been spent by the club. At the end of the day, even if we don’t turn a profit, the long-term benefit for the members far outweighs anything we could have made from hosting the tournament,” he said.

“We hope we set a good example, receive positive ratings and earn the opportunity to host even bigger tournaments in the future.”
