Javits Frimpong: What Martin Kpebu Wants Mahama Government to Demand From US

According to a report by GhanaWeb on Saturday November 7, 2026, private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has thrown his support behind the Ghanaian government’s efforts to engage the United States authorities over the death of Ghanaian national Javits Frimpong, amid renewed concerns about gun violence in the country.

Mr Kpebu urged the government to maintain diplomatic pressure on American officials to ensure that Ghana’s concerns are addressed and appropriate steps are taken in response to the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Speaking on TV3’s The Keypoints, he endorsed the position taken by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Smith, noting that the concerns and dissatisfaction expressed by the diplomat reflected his own views on the matter.

“Ultimately, I’ll go with Ambassador Smith as he’s expressed our government’s, the people and government’s of Ghana’s displeasure, concern about this particular problem, and then we’ll see how the American government can do more,” he said.

He encouraged the government to sustain its engagement with the US authorities, although he acknowledged that addressing gun violence in the United States would be challenging because of the longstanding debate over gun ownership and the influence of powerful interest groups.

Mr Kpebu also expressed hope that the diplomatic discussions would eventually lead to compensation for the families affected by the incident.

However, he emphasised that no financial settlement could adequately compensate for the loss of human life, although such support could help ease the suffering of the bereaved families.

He further noted that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration and Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States were better positioned to obtain additional information about the matter and should continue pressing for an appropriate response.

Mr Kpebu maintained that the complexity of America’s gun violence problem should not discourage Ghana from pursuing accountability and seeking action over the death of its citizen.

He expressed optimism that sustained diplomatic engagement could provide some relief to the affected families while contributing to broader efforts to address gun violence and promote public safety.
