Stephanie Okechukwu: World’s tallest women’s college basketball player makes her debut

According to a report by Vanguard published on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Nigerian basketball prospect Stephanie Okechukwu has officially begun her college basketball journey with Texas Tech University, achieving a remarkable milestone in women’s collegiate basketball.

At 7 feet 1 inch tall, the 21-year-old Nigerian has attracted considerable attention as the tallest female player in college basketball worldwide.

Okechukwu made her long-awaited debut on Thursday night when Texas Tech’s Lady Raiders faced Charlotte in their season-opening game. The Nigerian youngster played a key role in the team’s impressive 64-37 victory.

During her 21 minutes on the court, she contributed six points, grabbed 10 rebounds and recorded three blocks, delivering an encouraging performance in her first appearance.

She registered her first points through two successful free throws, while teammate Destinee Hooks led the scoring charts for Texas Tech with an impressive 16-point contribution.

Despite the promising statistics, Lady Raiders head coach Krista Gerlich believes there is still significant potential for Okechukwu to develop. Gerlich disclosed that the Nigerian player was not entirely satisfied with her performance but expressed optimism that regular playing opportunities and increased experience would help her improve.

With her remarkable height, Okechukwu has surpassed other players previously recognised among the tallest in women’s college basketball. They include Middle Tennessee State freshman Nicole Dominguez and Eastern Illinois sophomore Abbie Boutilier, both of whom stand at 6 feet 10 inches.

The Nigerian centre committed to Texas Tech in January but was unable to participate in the team’s previous season.

Before joining the American university basketball system, Okechukwu completed her secondary school basketball career in Japan in 2024. She subsequently combined appearances in an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) competition in the Philippines with further basketball development and training in Nigeria.

Her transition to college basketball was initially complicated by eligibility concerns. The authorities had first limited her college playing period to two years because of the gap year she spent before entering the university system.

However, Texas Tech challenged the initial decision through an appeal to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The appeal was successful, resulting in a waiver that gave Okechukwu the opportunity to compete for four years in college basketball.

Her impressive debut represents an important step in her development and places her among the Nigerian athletes attracting international attention in women’s basketball. With more playing time and continued improvement, expectations will be high as she progresses through her college career.
