Asiedu Nketiah Wins Chairmanship Position At African Political Parties Initiative
According to a report by 3News on November 7, 2026, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has been elected as the inaugural Chairman of the African Political Parties Initiative (APPI).
Mr Asiedu Nketiah accepted the responsibility on Saturday, November 7, during the African Political Parties Summit 2026 held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He accepted the position on behalf of the inaugural leadership of the initiative, expressing gratitude to the participating political parties for the confidence placed in him.
In his acceptance address, he acknowledged the Africa Governance Centre for establishing the initiative and bringing political parties from across the continent together under a common platform. He indicated that the formation of the leadership marked the beginning of the actual work of the organisation.
The newly elected chairman emphasised that political parties have an important responsibility beyond winning elections, explaining that they play a significant role in preparing future governments and shaping the quality of leadership across African countries.
He also highlighted several challenges facing the continent, including unemployment, limited electricity access, inadequate industrial development and the growing impact of artificial intelligence on production and employment. He stressed the need for African countries to develop the capacity to produce, innovate and create sustainable economic opportunities.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah further called for stronger political institutions, improved policy development and continuity in national development programmes, arguing that important projects and institutions should not be abandoned whenever governments change.
He also outlined the importance of APPI Agenda 2040, which is expected to guide political parties in developing stronger institutions and preparing future leaders. He called for greater participation of women and young people in political decision-making, alongside stronger party schools, research institutions and policy institutes.
He concluded by stressing that Africa’s future depends partly on the quality of political institutions established today, urging political parties across the continent to look beyond immediate electoral interests and work towards long-term development.
