Nyabisase School Back in the Spotlight After Fresh Incident During KCSE Exams
Nyabisase Secondary School in Kisii County has once again attracted national attention following a violent incident involving students, examination officials and police officers during the ongoing 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The latest incident has raised serious questions about discipline and security at the institution, especially given its previous history of unrest.
According to reports, the confrontation occurred on Thursday, November 5, when a team of Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) officials and police officers visited the school to monitor the national examinations.
However, what was expected to be a routine monitoring exercise reportedly turned chaotic after students attacked the visiting officials and security officers.
During the confrontation, the students allegedly seized a Ceska pistol from one of the police officers. The firearm reportedly remained missing for nearly three hours before security officers eventually recovered it following an extensive search.
Several examination officials and security officers sustained injuries during the incident. One police officer was left requiring specialised medical attention.
Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui confirmed that the firearm had been recovered, adding that investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The confrontation has also attracted the attention of Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, who condemned the violence and maintained that anyone found responsible would face appropriate action.
The latest incident has brought renewed attention to previous controversies involving the school.
In July 2026, Nyabisase Secondary School experienced another wave of unrest after students protested against the appointment of a new principal.
The demonstrations reportedly escalated into clashes between students and teachers, with stones being thrown during the confrontation. A dormitory was also set ablaze, forcing authorities to intervene.
The institution had also attracted national attention in 2019 after close to 200 KCSE candidates had their examination results cancelled over alleged examination malpractice.
These previous incidents have added to concerns about the management and discipline situation at the school.
Following Thursday’s confrontation, KNEC initiated an independent investigation to establish what happened and determine the appropriate action.
KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere visited the institution as authorities assessed the situation. The examination body also began reviewing security arrangements at the examination centre.
Police investigations are expected to establish the circumstances that led to the confrontation and identify those responsible for attacking the officials.
As the investigations continue, attention remains focused on Nyabisase Secondary School, with questions emerging over how such an incident could occur during one of the country’s most important national examinations.
