Julius Malema Reveals What Is Next for the EFF After Election Support Declines

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has said the party remains committed to fighting for the interests of ordinary South Africans despite a decline in its electoral support.

Malema indicated that the party would take time to reflect on the outcome of the elections, as the emerging results point to a significant drop in the EFF’s national support compared with its performance in the previous local government elections.

With 98% of voting districts declared nationally, the EFF had secured 6.26% of the vote. This represents a considerable decline from the 10.31% the party received in the 2021 local government elections.

The figures place the EFF under pressure to examine its electoral performance and understand the factors behind the reduction in support. The party has built much of its political identity around economic freedom, employment opportunities, land redistribution and improving the living conditions of disadvantaged communities.

However, the emerging results suggest that a growing number of voters may have chosen other political parties, raising questions about the EFF’s ability to maintain its position in South Africa’s increasingly competitive political environment.

Malema’s comments indicate that the party intends to assess the outcome rather than abandon its political objectives. He maintained that the EFF would continue fighting for the people, suggesting that its commitment to its supporters and political programme would remain unchanged despite the electoral setback.

The reflection process could provide an opportunity for the party to consider its campaign strategy, public messaging, leadership approach and relationship with voters across different communities.

The decline also comes at a time when South African politics is experiencing changing voter preferences, with established parties facing increased competition from smaller political movements and newer alternatives.

Although 98% of voting districts had been declared at the time of the figures, the final outcome was still subject to the completion of the counting and declaration process.

For the EFF, the results present an important moment to assess its position and determine how it intends to rebuild support ahead of future elections.
