Ghanaian Trader Explains Why She Rejects Mahama’s Third Term

A market woman at Dome in the Greater Accra Region has rejected calls for President John Dramani Mahama to pursue a third term in office, citing worsening business conditions and financial difficulties faced by traders under his administration.

The trader argued that market women were struggling to sustain their businesses and could not support any proposal for the president to remain in power beyond his current tenure.

Speaking in an interview, she acknowledged that Ghanaians experienced significant economic difficulties during the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

However, she maintained that despite the high cost of goods at the time, customers still had the financial capacity to make purchases.

She contrasted that situation with current market conditions, claiming that traders were finding it increasingly difficult to attract customers, even with reports of declining prices of some commodities.

According to her, the government’s claims of improved affordability were not reflected in the experiences of traders, as many consumers continued to struggle to purchase basic household necessities.

She further disclosed that some traders were being forced to borrow money to restock their shops but were still unable to generate enough sales to repay their debts.

To illustrate the extent of the problem, the market woman pointed to plantains displayed for sale, which she said were deteriorating because of poor patronage and the lack of customers.

She maintained that declining sales and mounting financial obligations were taking a serious toll on the livelihoods of market women, making it difficult for them to sustain their businesses.
