Why Safaricom is Demanding Kenyans to Surrender Old Phones and Chargers Before This Date

Safaricom has launched a nationwide e-waste drive, asking Kenyans to take unused phones, chargers, earphones, batteries and other small accessories to any of its retail shops before November 13, 2026.

The telco issued the notice on social media, poking fun at a common household habit. “Kila nyumba ina ile drawer ya chargers hazina kazi,” it posted, before asking customers whether they had old gadgets they no longer use.

Safaricom was clear that it will not pay for any surrendered device. It said the exercise is separate from its trade-in programmes, so customers should not expect credit or compensation, whatever the age or condition of the items.

All collected gadgets will go to licensed handlers, including the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre and Warmtech, which dismantle them and recover metals and plastics while managing hazardous parts according to environmental standards.

There is no cap on how many items one person can bring, and households, businesses and institutions can all take part.

The company said its e-waste programme dates back to 2012 and is anchored on a zero-waste-to-landfill commitment. It has previously reported collecting more than 2,000 tonnes of electronic waste.

Online, Kenyans wanted to know more. Kikwai Johana asked whether transport could be covered, saying his fare to a collection point would be KSh 800. Owour Kevin welcomed the move but questioned why such an initiative should have a deadline.

Kenya produces tens of thousands of tonnes of e-waste every year, much of it handled informally through burning or open dumping, which releases lead, mercury and cadmium into soil and groundwater.

Experts say a lasting solution needs steady collection systems, tougher regulation and more involvement from manufacturers and retailers.
